About the St. Mary by the Sea Retreat House

Our Deaf Cursillo #63, will be at the St. Mary by the Sea Retreat House in Cape May Point, NJ. A ministry sponsored by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Philadelphia, PA. The Retreat House is located by the ocean. It is a beautiful beach with a lighthouse next door. It provides each Cursillo participant a natural setting for experiencing God’s holy presence.

How can I sign up?

Only 30 new participants will be accepted into the Deaf Cursillo. The Deadline is August 31, 2011. You will receive a confirmation notice, maps and other essential information.

What happens at a Cursillo?

More than 2,000 Deaf Cursillistas have experienced it, they can’t really explain it. It is even more impossible to explain it to someone who hasn’t experienced it. The apostles could not explain the experience of what happened to them on Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit came. Only the Holy Spirit knows for sure.

The Cursillo experience really starts on Thursday night and continues until Sunday. The Cursillo helps people to understand what it means to follow Christ – and how to help each other follow Christ. Give your life a new meaning and the courage to live it fully. You will find the friendliness, the warmth, the spirit of Jesus in one another.

Who can come to the Cursillo?

Single and Married couples are welcome. It is for people 21 years and older.
All presentations are in American Sign Language, with no voice interpreter. We will have Mass Daily.

What are the goals for the Cursillo?

The Cursillo experience tries to help everyone:

discover their own importance
experience the presence and love of Jesus Christ
realize the importance of being a Christian in today’s world

Are Cursillo people different?

The Cursillo is for people like you! People who are Catholic, have been attending Church and Mass, but are still searching for something more! The Cursillo team are people just like you who work together to prepare and lead the Cursillo.

Lay people and spiritual directors give talks in American Sign Language with discussions after each talk. The Cursillo talks always include the experience of the speakers.

After the Cursillo

The most important part of the Cursillo happens after the Cursillo is finished.

The Cursillo weekend is the beginning of a journey. The Cursillo experience helps people come alive in faith and give encouragement to those who are already alive in Jesus. It makes life worth living and worth loving. You will love the friendliness, the warmth and the spirit of Jesus you see in each other. The journey continues all of our lives.

When is the Cursillo?

Participants arrive Thursday evening September 29, 2011 at 6:30 pm and it will end on Sunday, October 2, 2011 at 4:00 pm in St. Mary by the Sea Retreat House.

How much does it cost?

Cost is $225 per person. You will need to make a $40 deposit now then pay $185 by September 18, 2011. This covers the cost

of your room and meals package.

If you need help paying for your travel please contact your local ICDA chapter, your Priest, Pastoral Worker with the Deaf, or the Bishop of your diocese.

We will send you directions to St. Mary by the Sea Retreat House and a list of things to bring after we receive your registration form.

We will provide transportation from the Philadelphia International Airport (PHL)

or Atlantic City Airport (ACY) and please arrive in Philadelphia (Eastern time) before

4:30 pm. If coming by train, please use Amtrak in Philadelphia or Atlantic City and please reserve arrival time before 4:30 pm.

Please make your return trip reservations for anytime after 6pm. Our program ends at 3pm on Sunday.

Day 1

Depart from USA

Day 2

Arrive Tel Aviv Transfer to guesthouse, Bethlehem Overnight: Bethlehem

Day 3

Ein Karem and Jerusalem Shepherd’s Field in Beit Sahour, go to Ein Karem as Mary did when she visited her cousin Elizabeth; after lunch, visit St. Peter in Gallicantu Church and House of Caiaphas, Cenacle, Temple Mount [Abraham’s sacrifice, Genesis 22], and the Western Wall in Jerusalem. Overnight: Bethlehem

Day 4

Jerusalem Walk from the Mount of Olives to Gethsemane and then visit the Old City following the Way of the Cross [Via Dolorosa] to the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. After lunch near Jaffa Gate, enjoy free time in Old City to explore shops and possibly walk the ramparts [charge of about $5.00 for rampart access not included]. Overnight: Bethlehem

Day 5

Bethlehem University and Hebron Visit University, go to shops and after lunch go to Hebron to visit the Oak [Terebinth] of Mamre [Genesis 13:14-18 and beyond] and the Tomb of the Patriarchs [Genesis 23:19-20]. Evening cultural activity in Bethlehem. Overnight: Bethlehem

Day 6

Shechem and Ephraim in Samaria Travel to Sychar/Shechem [Nablus] and drink from Jacob’s Well [John 4:1-22] and then on to Ephraim [Taybeh] [John 11:54] for lunch and visit the local parish and the Parable House [a replica of a house at the time of Jesus]; possible visit to Taybeh Brewery. Overnight: Bethlehem

Day 7

Qumran, Dead Sea, Jericho Visit Qumran [Dead Sea Scrolls], go to kibbutz and take a dip in the Dead Sea, and then on to Jericho for lunch; see the Sycamore tree [Luke 19:1-4] and Mount of Temptation [Luke 4:1-13]. Overnight: Bethlehem

Day 8

Bethlehem Visit Women’s Cooperative and return to Bethlehem for lunch with local family followed by visit to Holy Family Hospital and La Crèche [orphanage], and then visit Cremisan Winery. Overnight: Bethlehem

Day 9

Visit grotto of the Church of Nativity and then travel to Mount Carmel along the Mediterranean coast passing Caesarea where Philip the Evangelist lived [Acts 8:40 and 21:8], where Peter was sent to minister to the Roman centurion Cornelius [Acts 10], and where Paul passed three times [Acts 9:30, 18:22, and 21:8]. Lunch en route. Follow the ancient path from the Carmelite monastery to the cave of Elijah the Prophet who challenged the priests of Baal [I Kings 18]. Day 10

Sea of Galilee On to the Sea of Galilee for a boat ride [weather permitting] and visits to the Mount of Beatitudes, Tabgha [where Jesus fed the 5000], and Capernaum where Peter lived and Jesus began his public ministry. Eat St. Peter’s fish at seaside restaurant. Bus tour around the Sea of Galilee passing through the “Land of the Gadarenes” [Matthew 8:28-32]. Then visit the Basilica of the Annunciation in Nazareth. Overnight: Nazareth

Day 11

Stop at Cana where Jesus performed his first miracle [John 2:1-11] and then cross the Northern Border at Sheik Hussein Bridge to Jordan. Lunch en route. Travel to Our Lady of Peace Center in Amman. Dinner and then and Arabic dancing. Overnight: Amman

Day 12

Petra Travel to Petra [Sela in Bible], one of the new Seven Wonders of the World. The Arabs at Pentecost [Acts 2: 11] probably came from Petra. Lunch in Petra. Overnight: Amman

Day 13

Madaba, Mt. Nebo, and Baptism Site at Bethany Beyond Jordan Go to Madaba [Numbers 21:30 and Joshua 13:9 but best known for the oldest extant map of the Holy Land in the form of the mosaic floor at the Church of St. George], have lunch in Madaba, visit mosaic workshop, and then to Mt. Nebo [Deuteronomy 32:48-52], and finally to the Baptism Site at Bethany beyond the Jordan for the renewal of baptism vows. Dinner at Our Lady of Peace Center. Depart from Amman on overnight flight.

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

My son Ryan has been extremely interested for quite some time in going on a pilgrimage to France. We were unable to find a comprehensive one that accommodates deaf and hard-of-hearing travelers like him until Fr. Tom Coughlin, who is America's first deaf Catholic priest and a personal friend of ours, recently agreed to be the chaplain for such a pilgrimage in 2011.

I had previously researched organizations that specialize in European pilgrimages and tours, and the one that impressed me the most was Canterbury Tours. Therefore, as soon as Fr. Coughlin decided to lead this tour, Dag Syversen of Canterbury and I began working out the details for a customized package, based on suggestions from Fr. Tom, Dag, Ryan, and a few of my own. The attached two-page document contains the final itinerary, pricing, and reservation form. It can be easily printed out front-to-back and folded with the three-column itinerary on the inside to serve as a brochure.

I know that I'm a little prejudiced in this matter, but I sincerely believe that there isn't another tour of France being offered that compares to the one we've put together. To illustrate why I feel this way, I also made a color-coded itinerary (which can be printed on legal-size paper) that highlights the religious sites, churches, and secular sites which will be visited. I challenge anyone to find a more comprehensive tour package for France at such a reasonable price.

As indicated above, the primary objective of pursuing this tour in this first place was the accommodation of deaf and hard-of-hearing Catholics. However, as Fr. Tom put it in one of his messages to me, "We are one body in Christ", and he therefore invites hearing individuals to join him on this tour also, since the guides and sign language interpreter will be speaking English. This opens up a multitude of reasons for everyone to consider this pilgrimage --- including those who participate in family trips and club members who enjoying traveling together.

Canterbury is now ready to begin accepting participants' deposits with the form on the attached brochures to confirm their reservations for this pilgrimage. Ryan already mailed in his deposit last weekend. Note that those who live overseas can also register and join in the tour by making their own travel arrangements to meet the group from the U.S. at the hotel in Lourdes where they will be staying on May 23rd, in which case the price will be reduced by $750 per person.

I'm hoping that you'll let your respective regional members know about this once-in-a-lifetime pilgrimage through one of your existing communication vehicles or publications, or simply by forwarding them this email, so that as many people as possible can join Fr. P.S. Just to let you know a little about us, Ryan . . . a Bronx native . . . is a graduate of the Mill Neck Manor School for the Deaf on Long Island and NTID / RIT in Rochester. I was born and raised in Wyoming and graduated from Regis College (now University) in Denver many moons ago. We are both charter members of the Knights of Columbus "Sign of the Cross" Council # 11254, which was the first council in the world established primarily for deaf and hard-of-hearing Catholic men.

On May 20, 2010, I received a formal letter from the NCOD President about my selection as Western Region Representative for a term of three years. Two weeks later, I sent word to St. Benedict's Parish webmaster about creating a website for NCOD as a tool for collaboration. The website whose address is www.ncodwr.org has been up and running since July 2, 2010. It has: brief Mission Statement, History of the Western region, Succession of Representatives, Map of the Western Region, Directory and Resources.

Since my selection, I emailed priests, religious and pastoral workers in the Western region, some of whom I have already met or knew --- informing them about my selection as their new representative. The Western Region has 33 Arch/dioceses (30 Western rite and 3 Eastern rite) recognized by the United State Conference of Catholic Bishops. So far, I have received feedback from the Archdiocese of Santa Fe, Archdiocese of Portland in Oregon, the Diocese of Sacramento, the Diocese of Phoenix and the Diocese of Fresno. Some Deaf Catholics in the Bay Area who reside within the boundaries of the Diocese of Sacramento, the Diocese of Oakland, the Diocese of San Jose and the Diocese of Santa Rosa. The major goal this year or in two to three years time is to have a ministry development workshop for members from the Western Region.
